Comment: A very good book about jsp/servlet.
I'm not sure if this book will be good for someone with no jsp/servlet experience; this book is easy to read and has a lot of information, all of it well organized.
However, this book does not "discuss" the topics, it doesnt really engage with you to think about why you would need this or that feature in jsp/servlets; it just describes (very well) that feature.
For the way this book is suppose to be used (reference book in my opinion) it is a very good book.

Summary: Highly recommended book
Comment: I bought this book six months ago and its been a while since I completed it from the first to the last page. I never before had experience with Java technologies and all I was looking for was a book for a beginners which works with Java web technologies. After I saw reviews from the other buyers I decided to by this book.

I wanted several times to write review and to say that this is the best book I ever had in my hands. This is exactly what I wanted. The author assumes that you already have basic Java skills but don't be afraid...

What is good:
The books covers JSP, JSTL, MVC approach, Servlets, Tomcat basics and much more and all chapters are well written and very easy to understand. If you simple go through chapters you can complete one application at the end (music web shop). I like this approach because reference books is not recommended for beginners. Murach uses NetBeans and first I scared that it will be hard to "translate it" to Eclipse (which is my favorite editor) but it shows editor windows only in the first chapter. Later in the book it is irrelevant which editor do you use because all you will find is code listings. (by the way, code works perfectly)

What is bad:
Unf. book printing quality is not very good and it won't last long if you use it every day. Complete index at the end of the book suddenly drops out from the book. When I already mentioned Index it is to short and there are much more to add inside which means you'll need a much more time to find what you're looking for. It is only 10 pages long... Also, the bad thing is that there are not clean instructions how to set-up Tomcat-MySQL-Java utf-8 connection so I had a job to setup this myself.

I agree that JSP/Servlet combination is not so "fresh" technology but for Java web apps start this is very good book.

Summary: An excellent guide
Comment: I have to admit I was a bit intimidated by jsp and servlets. But Murach's treatment of the topic is excellent. The book walks you through the installation of a Tomcat server and Netbeans IDE and then the coding starts. It goes step by step, starting with simple examples, but the pace doesn't feel overly slow. You always feel like you're making good progress.

I love the format of the book (explanations on the left page and code on the right page). Now I want every programming book to be handled in a similar fashion. I've tried the Head First series, and though I like those books, they're difficult to use as a reference. Murach's format can be used to learn the language and later on makes an invaluable reference. Programming details are just easier to find in this book.

Overall a great book. It's definitely a beginner's book, so I don't know how much mileage an advanced user would get from it.

Summary: Great book for the novice JSP Developer
Comment: This is a great book that I found VERY useful in getting up to speed in developing JSP web functionality. I inherited this web application project where I did not have access to any of the Java class libraries and I was told that I needed to make customizations to the site in jsp pages only. I purchased this book along with the Oracle 9i JDBC Programming book (see my review on this book). Both these books combined provided me all the examples I needed to write some pretty cool functionality in the web application.

Great features of this book include:
* A great introductory chapter that shows a good overview of jsps and servelets.
* How to install Tomcat and use it as your web server.
* How to use NetBeans as you IDE. This is optional, but all the examples in the book use it and its free.
* A crash course in HTML. This is a great basic chapter that I reference over and over again.
* How to develop JSPs. Another great introduction to using JSPs. If you're developing JSPs, you'll want to review the HTML chapter and this one.
* How to develop Servelets. I read this, but currently am not using it. It's really good architecture to use it.
* The MVC pattern . Great chapter. Shows how to use set and get request Attributes to set values on the fly. Lots of good info in this chapter.
* Sessions and cookies. Another great chapter. I use the session set and get attribute functions all the time to set and get values on the fly!
* Java Beans. Good introduction to Java Beans. They're very useful in accessing back end classes through your jsps.

There's lots more in this book that I haven't gotten to. I can't wait. This is a great book and I recommend it highly.
