Summary: Healing After Loss
Comment: In my capacity as a bereavement facilitator, I have given this book to each person attending the group. It is comprised of reflections on loss and grief by people who have suffered their own loss. Many of the bereaved use it to help them get through each day and others use it in prayer and meditation. They all enthusiastically endorse this book as being helpful and supportive and as mirroring their own feelings.

Comment: I lost my husband in 2006 and I received many books from friends. This book has been one of my favorites. I keep it on my nightstand and sometimes in my purse if I'm going somewhere because you never know when those moments of grief overwhelm you. What I liked about it is you can pick it up and read anywhere in the book and find some comfort when you are having a bad day. The purchase of this book now was for a friend of mine who lost his wife. I know it will help him in the days to come.

Comment: As a psychologist I have found this book to be a comfort for several people going through the grief process. One of its benefits is that it does not require one to read large chunks of information. A short daily reading is as much as most people can do in this condition.

Summary: Just the right thing
Comment: I didn't know where to start after I lost my father. It's still very recent and I'm still not sure that I know where to go, but this little book has been a great help. It's just the right size, not too wordy, not too much to take in when everything seems to be spinning around you. But just enough insight to help you focus on something for the day. It always seems to say just what I need and point me in the right direction for the day. So much so, that I bought this book for a teacher/friend of mine who lost her mother just weeks after my father passed. She also has said that it's just perfect.

Summary: Worth it's salt
Comment: A dear friend actually gave me the first copy and after reading a few pages I bought five more to give to others in like situations. Most of the books about healing are well intentioned but not much help. "Healing after Loss" by Hickman is a wonderful thoughtful collection of philosophic paragraphs dealing with loss and healing. The author speaks from personal tragedy of her own and is gifted in the selection and presentation of each days reading. Well worth owning and digesting.
